Cats are among the most popular pets on the planet, and on the internet, they are king! The worldwide web is full of funny cat memes, hilarious cat videos, and cute cat pictures. Some felines have even become true internet celebrities! Just think of Grumpy Cat, Lil Bub, Merlin, and Atchoum to name a few! There is no doubt that the internet has contributed to the popularity of cats as pets, and to the love for cats in general. And, if you really love something, why not contribute a special day to it.

Awareness and Adoption

Some cat-related holidays were created to raise awareness about important issues. In 2001, Alley Cat Allies came up with Feral Cat Day – a holiday to raise awareness to feral cat colonies and promote the trap-neuter-return method. Likewise, Cats Protection created Black Cat Day in 2001 to draw attention to the fact that black felines spend more time in shelters than their more colorful counterparts before they get adopted. 

Marketing and Merchandising

With the popularity of cats, businesses have recognized the potential to market cat-related products and merchandise. There’s even a couple from Philadelphia who created over 70 holidays – 4 of which are cat-related – had them copyrighted, and made a calendar out of them.
