Can You Feed Your Cat a Vegan Diet?

Unfortunately, you really shouldn’t feed your cat any vegan meals. While your intentions likely come from a good place, like farm animal welfare or sustainability, cats simply aren’t built to thrive without meat in their diet. Unlike humans or even dogs, cats are obligate carnivores, which means they must eat meat to survive.

Why Can Cats Not Survive on a Vegan Diet?

Cats aren’t just finicky about their food. To thrive and even survive, our feline friends need several nutrients that can only be found in animal tissue. These so-called essential nutrients are key to your cat’s health and eventually even their survival.

The essential nutrients your cat needs to get from an animal source include:

  • Taurine – vital for heart and eye health
  • Vitamin A – cats must get this from meat as they can’t convert plant-based beta-carotene into vitamin A like humans can.
  • Vitamin D – While humans can get vitamin D from the sun, cats need to get this from their food
  • Vitamin B12 – crucial for nervous system function
  • Arachidonic acid – an omega-6 fatty acid only found in animal fat

Without these nutrients, cats can develop serious health issues such as heart disease, poor vision, and immune system deficiencies.

Why Not Replace These Essential Nutrients with Plant-Based Supplements?

While technically, some of these nutrients can be synthetically produced or extracted from non-meat sources, many of them can’t. In addition, the quality of the supplements would still be inferior to the real deal. Here are some examples:

  • Taurine is hard to replace: Most plant-based sources do not contain sufficient taurine, and even when they do, cats can often not digest and absorb it.
  • Plant proteins are less digestible: While plants do contain proteins, cats have short digestive tracts that are optimized for animal proteins, not fiber-heavy plant protein. Cats can however get health benefits from eating some veggies, but they still need meat protein.
  • Synthetic supplements vary in quality: It’s challenging to ensure every meal consistently meets all of a cat’s nutritional needs without meat.

Is a Vegetarian Diet Better Than a Vegan One?

The main difference between a vegan and a vegetarian diet is that a vegetarian diet still includes some animal-derived products, like eggs or dairy. At first, this might sound like a good compromise for your cat but in reality, it’s not enough. Most vegetarian cat diets are still incomplete and unbalanced, meaning you’d need to add meat-based foods or supplements to meet your cat’s essential nutritional needs.

Conclusion: Vegan Diets Are Not Safe for Cats

While a vegan lifestyle can be a healthy and ethical choice for humans, it doesn’t work the same way for cats. Their bodies are biologically designed to thrive on animal-based proteins and nutrients.

Feeding your cat a vegan or vegetarian diet may put their health at serious risk. If you’re looking for more sustainable or ethical ways to feed your pet, consider high-quality, responsibly sourced meat-based cat foods or consult your vet about alternative options.
