Rule of threes
As shelters are often asked how long it will take for a cat to adjust to their new home, they use the 3-3-3 rule to explain to new cat parents what to expect. Here’s how that works.
First 3 days
During the first three days in their new home, cats are likely to hide away. Cats are creatures of habit, and when taken away from their environment and daily routines, they need some time to adjust. Don’t be disappointed if you notice any of the following behaviors:
- Hiding under furniture or in small spaces
- Not eating much
- Being quiet and avoiding people
- Hissing when you come near themcerques
This behavior is very normal. Here is how you can help your feline friend to feel at ease and come out of their shell:
- Keep your cat in a low-traffic room
- Provide various safe hiding spots
- Spend time in the room with them, but don’t force interaction (e.g. read a book)
First 3 weeks
Now that the cat feels a little safer, they will start to explore. Give them some space and make sure they can explore your home safely. You can expect your cat to:
- Explore more rooms
- Watch you from a distance and perhaps even approach you
- Be willing to play, especially with wand toys
You can help your cat to adjust by:
- Playing with them
- Using treats to build positive associations
- Establishing routines
First 3 months
By the three-month mark, your cat will likely feel like part of the family. Most cats will:
- Seek affection
- Enjoy playtime and being petted
- Groom themselves in your presence
- Show their true personality
Bear in mind that each cat is different. Some felines have been through a lot and may need more time to get used to their new home and family. Know that this isn’t your fault, nor that of your cat, and try not to give up. Even the most frightened cats can eventually become loving companions with patience and care.
