Every cat is different, of course, and outdoor adventures are only suitable for cats who genuinely enjoy them. With patient training, suitable safety equipment and close supervision, however, some confident cats can discover a whole new world alongside their favorite people.
Louis: The mountain-climbing cat
Known online as “Louis the Peak Cat,” Louis is a feline mountaineer with some impressive achievements to his name. He has completed the UK Three Peaks and climbed six mountain summits in total, exploring routes such as the Great Ridge and Catbells.
Louis completes his hikes on foot while wearing a harness. Along the way, he has experienced forests, hillsides and breathtaking mountain landscapes, charming the people he meets on the trail. His adventures offer a wonderful example of the close bond that can form when a cat and their favorite person explore the world together.
Xena: Taking on the Trails
Xena is a deaf Turkish Angora mix from Vancouver Island, but her lack of hearing does not keep her from enjoying the outdoors. She loves going on hikes, playing in water and watching birds. For her safety, she only ventures outside on a leash.
Because Xena cannot hear spoken commands, her family is training her using hand signals and treats. They hope her adventures will help raise awareness of congenital deafness in cats and encourage more people to consider adopting deaf cats. With her adventurous nature and willingness to learn, Xena is a wonderful example of a feline champion who experiences the world in her own way.
Hershey: Adventure Has No Age Limit
Hershey was already 18 years old and living with kidney failure when his foster family welcomed him into their home. Knowing their time together might be limited, they decided to fill his days with new and enjoyable experiences.
Hershey responded by thriving for another ten months. In his senior years, he became an adventure cat and went for a walk around the lake every Friday. Hershey passed away in July 2024, but not before showing that it is never too late to discover something new. His family remembers him as the brightest of souls.
Bodi: Road trip across Europe
Bodi began exploring in a backpack when he was around four and a half months old. Before planning a longer vacation, his owner wisely arranged a short trial trip to a cabin in Belgium to find out whether he would enjoy traveling. It was a success.
Bodi and his owner subsequently embarked on a 3,000 km (1,864-mile) road trip through Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland. Together, they encountered mountains, rivers, forests, fields, lakes and beaches, and even went canoeing. Between larger trips, Bodi continues to enjoy walks closer to home in the Netherlands.
Taffy: The Cat Who Crossed a Continent
Taffy was estimated to be between one and four years old when she was adopted from a humane society. After spending her first few years with her family as a house cat, she discovered a surprising talent for travel.
Beginning in 2015, Taffy and her feline companion Munster accompanied their family on regular journeys across the United States and Canada. According to her family, they traveled through all 48 contiguous US states and most of Canada. During the summers, Taffy even stayed aboard the family’s “pirate ship,” where she took her responsibilities seriously enough to inspect the sailboat while its wooden planks were being replaced.
Zodiac: Always Ready for Action
Zodiac is a sociable Highland Lynx with what his family describes as a clingy, cat-dog personality. He loves being close to them, whether they are camping, boating, shopping, relaxing beside a fire or even biking to a concert.
His athletic interests continue at home, where he fetches his fishing-rod toy and plays soccer with his family’s feet. He also enjoys leash hikes and competes in TICA cat shows, where he has earned the title of Grand Master. Reportedly happy to make friends with cats, dogs and even squirrels, Zodiac is an inspiring feline champion with a wonderfully varied schedule.
Marv: The Senior Agility Superstar
Marv may be a senior, but he has no intention of slowing down. This outdoors-loving adventure cat enjoys practising tricks, playing fetch and taking part in agility activities. He can jump over hurdles and even leap through hoops.
Marv’s game of fetch is still a work in progress, as he has not quite mastered the “bringing it back” part. After all that activity, he is more than ready to snuggle as close to his person’s face as possible. His combination of athletic ability, determination and pure sweetness makes him a champion in his family’s eyes.
Polly: The Hiking Cat with a Heart of Gold
Polly is a sweet, sociable American Shorthair with some very distinctive paws. She is polydactyl, meaning she has extra toes, which inspired her name. Always ready to get out and explore in her hiking gear, Polly enjoys joining her person on trails and climbing trees along the way.
Polly’s sociable nature has also taken her in a very different direction. She is now officially certified as a therapy pet and regularly visits nursing homes and colleges in her area. She has even visited the library, where children read to her. From climbing trees to bringing companionship to people of all ages, Polly has a wonderful way of making every outing meaningful.
