Kittens first open their eyes at 3–4 weeks old

Some kittens open their eyes as early as two days old, while others keep them closed for up to 16 days. Either way, their vision isn’t fully developed until they’re about 6–8 weeks old. No wonder kittens are so clumsy!

Cats have great vision in absolute darkness

Cats have excellent night vision, but they still can’t see in complete darkness. Even their highly adapted eyes need a small amount of light, from the moon or the stars for example, to detect shapes and movement.

Cats have a wider field of vision than humans

As natural-born hunters, cats like to keep an eye on potential prey. Thanks to their wide field of vision of about 200 degrees, they can quickly spot movement at the edges of their world, giving them a handy advantage when hunting or staying alert.

Cats have a third eyelid

Unlike us, cats have three eyelids. The third one hides in the inner corner of their eyes and usually spring to action when cats sleep or hunt to moisten and protect the eyes.

White cats with blue eyes are more likely to be deaf

White cats with blue eyes are indeed more likely to be deaf because the gene responsible for their white coat and blue eye color is linked to inner ear development. Sometimes this gene also affects the hearing structures in the inner ear, which is why these beautiful cats are more likely to be deaf.
