Dry cat food is more nutrient-dense than wet food

Dry cat food is generally more nutrient-dense than wet food because it contains less water and more concentrated ingredients per gram. This means your cat gets more calories and nutrients in a smaller volume of food—but it also means portion control is important to avoid overeating.

If you feed your cat dry food, you don’t have to brush their teeth

While dry food can help keep your cat’s teeth cleaner than wet food, it’s not enough to replace regular tooth brushing. Many cats don’t chew their kibble properly, and even if they do, most kibble pieces aren’t large or abrasive enough to have a meaningful effect on dental health.

Carbohydrates are necessary to help form the kibble. Without them, the food wouldn’t hold together during the extrusion process and would simply fall apart. That’s why you often find ingredients like sweet potato in dry cat food.

While dry cat food has a relatively long shelf life, it does eventually expire, even if the bag is unopened or vacuum-sealed. Over time, the fats in the food can become rancid, and nutrients may degrade—making the food less healthy or, in the long run, even unsafe to eat. Always check the “best by” or expiration date on the packaging, and store the food in a cool, dry place to keep it fresh.

Some dry products, like cat treats or food toppers, aren’t nutritionally complete. Always look for labels like “complete and balanced” to ensure your cat gets all the nutrients they need to stay happy and healthy.
